Soul Skins

Soul Skins, is a on-going series of sculptures I have been working with for the past 20 years. These sculptures are derived from years of experience exploring my own and other womenʼs struggle with body image. Through these sculptures, I provide the viewer with an experience that allows them to view the stories of each woman's journey within her skin.

My intention in making these Soul Skins is to help women heal the negative perceptions of ourselves through viewing our bodies as beautiful complex works of art, and telling the story of our souls.

Each Soul Skin is a collaboration between the woman being cast and myself. I work with each woman to translate how she feels within her skin and her personal sensation through the lining and adornment of the sculpture.

Often, the subject is very specific with the material to be used to translate what it she feels within her skin. I have had many interesting requests about how to line the skins; from nails to fresh daisies, sand paper to roses.

The soul skins can be worn by the viewer, which makes the sculptures interactive, and provides the viewer with the experience of being in a womanʼs skin. The materials used in the sculptures are latex, foam, fabric and various organic and inorganic materials.
